If you manage your positioning well, you can manage to pull in only one of the mobs waiting outside at a time, killing them off quickly and efficiently. Of course, nooks are not the only thing to look for.
Often, on the inside of a base, there are smaller groupings of mobs. Look for groups of twos or threes standing relatively by their lonesome. It takes a good sense of estimation sometimes, but it will serve you well in the long-run, keeping your enemies down to a manageable number.
Fight the Hard Fight Only Once - When you do have to fight down a challenging group, get back to it as soon as the first one spawns back. The delay between each mobs re-spawn will bring them down into manageable chunks.
After a round or two of this, you can usually get a group of up to three mobs repining at completely separate moments in time, with enough time left over for you to rest, loot the bodies, and heal after each spree.
